What is Sudoku and how do you play it? Simple Sudoku rules & lots of fun – for children and adults

At first glance, Sudoku may look complicated, but in fact you don’t need any mathematics – only logic, patience, and a bit of time to think.

Sudoku is based on very simple rules – and that is exactly what makes it so magical. Although the structure is always the same, every Sudoku puzzle offers a new and exciting challenge. No wonder children and adults alike love Sudoku!

How do you play Sudoku? The most important Sudoku rules explained simply.

A Sudoku is a logical number puzzle consisting of a 9×9 grid. This grid is divided into nine smaller 3×3 blocks. Some numbers are already given – the rest must be filled in logically.

The basic Sudoku rules (ideal for beginners):

  • Each row must contain the numbers 1–9 exactly once
  • Each column must also contain the numbers 1–9 exactly once
  • Each 3×3 block must include every number from 1–9 exactly once
  • No number may be repeated
  • No number may be missing

So if you are wondering how to play Sudoku, the answer is very simple:
Fill in all empty cells so that each number appears exactly once – in every direction.

Sudoku is simple in structure – yet incredibly engaging. Once your brain “catches” the rhythm of the puzzle, you dive deep into logic and the rewarding feeling of success.

Why do people around the world love Sudoku?

Sudoku is not just a game – it is real brain fitness. The benefits are impressive:

  • improves concentration
  • strengthens logical thinking
  • calms the mind and supports focus
  • creates a sense of achievement

Many countries – including Japan, Germany, the USA, and England – regularly host Sudoku championships and even a World Sudoku Championship, organized by the World Puzzle Federation.

Sudoku for children – learning logical thinking through play

Sudoku is ideal for children! Why?

Because they understand the rules incredibly quickly and, while solving puzzles, train the following skills at the same time:

  • visual perception
  • concentration
  • patience
  • self-confidence

Luma, the little fox – learning Sudoku through a story

In my book “The World of Sudoku Masters”, Luma, a little fox, guides children through a magical adventure world. Every path in the forest brings a new Sudoku puzzle. Children discover the Sudoku rules step by step – embedded in a warm and engaging story.

We start with simple Sudoku sizes (4×4 and 6×6)

This allows children to experience quick success and later feel confident enough to move on to larger Sudokus.

Sudoku beginner tips – perfect for children and adults

  1. Start with rows or columns that have only a few missing numbers
You will find solutions there the fastest.
  2. Make notes
Small numbers in the corners are not “cheating” – they are a professional Sudoku technique.
  3. Look for patterns
It’s not only about where a number can go, but also where it cannot go.
  4. Take a break if you get stuck
With a fresh perspective, new solutions often appear.
  5. Practice step by step
Just like in Luma’s book, start with small grids and work your way up to 9×9 Sudokus.

Sudoku worldwide – and right at home

You can play Sudoku almost anywhere:

  • on the go
  • during a coffee break
  • together with your children
  • as a screen-free family activity
  • or even as training for competitions

All you need is a pen – and a moment of calm.
